LAND GRADING

Land Grading involves removing earth from higher spots, called "cutting" and filling in the lower spots, called "filling." Most projects need a range of "cut and fill" to achieve the desired level and slope. The purpose is to create a smooth landscape free of unwanted variations in elevation. This provides a level base for planting cover crops or for landscaping uses. Lawn maintenance is much easier when the yard is properly graded. In uneven yards, the topsoil or fertilizer applied at the top of higher spots will wash off into the dips. Water can collect in the dips as well, leading to standing water problems. Proper grading can also address soil concerns such as excessively clay filled earth.
